Ok here is my situation. This is a newly built box and for whatever reason I cannot get it to power on and stay on. here is what I have tried.
First I tried with both the plugs from the power supply plugged in to the motherboard. (the small square 4 watt and the long big plug) and the box powers on and it immediately shuts off. So then I added a video card, still same result. Then I added memory, same result. So I took out the small 4 watt square plug from the motherboard and left the big one in place. The box powers on but the cpu does not spin as fast and nothing shows up on the screen. However when I have both plugs plugged in, I see words coming up including the little yellow logo on the top right hand side of the screen just like on any custom built box then it just shuts off.
Now this processor is a 3.0 pentium 4 processor with HT capabilities. However, the mb does not support hyperthreading. I was told at Comp USA (for whatever that is worth) that this should not matter. However, all parts on this box are good.
So, my question is, Could this be a possibility, having a mb that doesn't support ht but the processor does but still having it work all the same? Or, will motherboards not take hyperthreaded processors if the board doesn't support it?
mb not supporting your ht cpu is not the issue.
I have built comps and none of my mb supported ht's, while my cpu is ht enabled.
1. Check the heatsinc, if temps hit a certain degrees c, the mb can and will just shut off. Did you apply grease exactly as directed? I know that arctic cooling requires precisely a thin layer and no more, else it won't work.
2. Did you ground yourself thoroughly. Antistatic can be subtle but deadly to your system. A shock to the board may not be felt or seen by you, but do much damage to your circuitry(mb/cpu/cards).
3. You might just have a DoA board :P.
Yes, I applied justa thin layer, and it doesn't even stay on that long for it to even get that hot. So that is why I am questioning it.
just from what you've said, this sounds like the MB is Not working properly, i would exchange it if you can and see if that helps..

What bored would you recommend? This I believe is an abit.
asus p5l-mx
only cause it has not failed me, precious little bad review and tons of good ones.
Only bad thing about that board is that should you elect to o.c your onboard LAN will fail and so will your onboard sound. There goes your 2 PCI slots heh
I always try to build micro systems. No need to take up more space with mid towers/full towers IMO unless you're building an expandable servers.
Thanks i will get a new bored sometime here int he futre
